ULTRASOUND SCREENINGS

When is a breast ultrasound screening a good idea?

Ultrasound is a safe, radiation-free imaging tool that uses sound waves instead of radiation to visualize the structural details of the breast tissue. This provides us with an opportunity to take a proactive approach with our breast health. It can assist your doctor in evaluating causes of pain, swelling, a lump, or abnormal findings found by other tests such as a mammogram or thermogram.

If a lump is present in the breast, it can visualize whether it appears to be benign, such as a fluid-filled cyst, enlarged lymph node, fatty lipoma or fibroadenoma, or if it presents with more suspicious characteristics. Ultrasound gives you and your doctor more insight and confidence in deciding any next steps needed for your personalized health care.

All ultrasound services include:

  • Imaging session with an experienced Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographer

  • Interpretation by board-certified radiologists

  • Results shared directly with you and/or your doctor

  • Copy of your images on disc for convenience

Results are typically available within 1-2 weeks of your exam. This is a self-pay screening service, so a doctor's prescription/order for breast ultrasound is not required. You can utilize this service any time, as often as you'd like.

Why breast ultrasounds are a smart addition

  • An ultrasound can increase the detection of breast cancer from approximately 48% to 97%, particularly in women with dense breasts

  • Ultrasounds outperform 3D mammograms in women with dense breasts, according to a study conducted in Italy, increasing detection rates of breast cancer by 75%

  • Ultrasounds are safe, easy, pain-free and radiation-free

  • No painful compression of breast tissue â€‹

  • Entire chest can be imaged, including underarms where lymph nodes can be evaluated

  • Safely images breasts with implants, no risk of rupture

  • No limitation for varying breast sizes, small or large

  • Available for women who would like additional breast imaging, such as younger women or women with concerns due to family history, BRCA gene mutations, and other risk factors

  • Great option for pregnant or breastfeeding women

Breast thermography is not a replacement for mammography or any other form of breast imaging. Breast thermography is meant to be used in addition to mammography and other tests. Breast thermography and mammography are complementary procedures, one does not replace the other. All thermography reports are meant to identify thermal emissions that suggest potential risk markers only and do not in any way suggest diagnosis and/or treatment. According to studies, earliest detection is realized when multiple tests are used together. This approach includes breast self-examinations, physical breast exams by a doctor, mammography, ultrasound, MRI, thermography, and other tests that may be ordered by your physician.
